Diversion Burglaries

A string of "diversion burglaries" are occurring in the area targeting our senior residents. A diversion burglary or distraction crime is committed when a person attempts to lure a homeowner outside while an accomplice enters the home and commits burglary (enters a home and steals valuables). The criminal will use a ruse to get the homeowner outside, such as telling them they are with the water company or other utility. In other cases a female may approach the home asking for water for her child or to use the phone because their car broke down nearby. The criminal may also ask or forcibly gain entry into the residence.

Individuals offering to perform various home repair jobs such as driveway, roof, and gutter or asphalt repair are also approaching seniors. The perpetrators claim to have materials left over from other jobs, offer discounts, or say that a close relative sent them.

Once the criminal has gained access to a residence they distract the homeowner while another searches the house for valuables. In some instances the offenders are using radios to alert the other criminal(s) inside the home.

If you are approached by an individual stating to work for a utility company or wishing to do repair work at your residence, ask to see proper identification and call the employer to verify their identity. If anyone suspicious approaches your home, do not open the door for him or her; contact the Washington Township Police Department immediately at (908) 876-3232. If you have any questions please call the Community Policing Unit at (908) 876-8309.
