In
April, an educational program for the first and second
graders regarding how and when to dial 911 is scheduled at
the Kossman and Old Farmers Schools. Instructors include
Communications Officers, police officers assigned to the
Community policing unit, and teachers.
Communications Officers, the same individuals who
answer the 911 phone calls, will be the lead instructors
for the program. The students will use actual phones to
familiarize themselves with the mechanics of calling 911.
Communications Officers will cover what the 911 system
actually is, under what circumstances a child should, and
should not, call 911. The program is designed to be as
hands on as possible. Communications Officers will explain
to the students what type of questions the students will
be asked when they call 911, and why the call taker is
asking the questions.
The program aims to make the students both comfortable
with, and aware of, the circumstances when the 911 system
should be activated.
