Letter from Iraq

590TH FIELD SERVICE COMPANY

To the folks at Washington Twp Police Dept,

 June 30, 2004

Thanks again for your kind words and thoughts. Just a little about our unit - we are a field service company, which means we set up the showers, laundry, and clothing repair shops for different camps.

Right now, half of my platoon members are at different remote locations. I am their Platoon Leader, which means I'm basically in charge of all 43 people under me, and I'm just turning 24! It's pretty crazy, but I enjoy it. I just graduated college a year and a half ago, and came to Iraq after being at my first duty station for only two months. We're from Ft. Drum, New York, a lot different than here. I don't miss the sub-zero weather though!

Life is actually pretty normal around here. We work regular days: PT in the morning, work 9-5, then have free time. There aren't many people around here that I'm "allowed" to be friends with, so I spend a lot of time on the internet, which is how I found out about the AnySoldier.US and other websites. I noticed that some of my soldiers didn't seem to get much mail from home, so I wanted to make sure everyone received something and felt appreciated. I frequently give certain soldiers their own boxes, but usually we organize all the goodies and packages and leave them free to everyone in tl1e company. The snacks are always the first to go, of course! The big favorite right now are those freezer pops in the plastic packages - it doesn't matter if they melt on their way over here, and they're great on hot days (it's getting to be 110+ every day now!) But really, we don't need anything in particular, everyone just enjoys getting some mail from time to time!

I just got back from a weeklong visit to one of my sites, and it was like Christmas when I got back, because there were so many boxes waiting to be handed out and opened! It was great. I love to see them all excited like little kids under the tree! Anyways, I have gone on and on for long enough now. I just wanted to write you back personally to thank you and tell you how much the soldiers appreciate everyone's support from home. Take care.

Sincerely,

1LT Melissa (Missy) Pratt
