Washington Township Police News

Some of the items shipped.Washington Township Police Department has had a close working relationship with the Washington Township Policeman’s Benevolent Association Local 301 since its inception in 1981.

Mutually they have worked on projects such as Toys for Tots, funding D.A.R.E. programs, fishing derby’s, sponsoring children’s events, awards for scouting programs and scholarships for students. This year they have chosen to honor the fighting men and women who are currently overseas fighting the war on terrorism.

Captain Gundersdorf, and D/Sgt. Pellegrino, spearheaded the effort to send packages to soldiers currently stationed in Afghanistan and Iraq. Information from the web site Anysoldier.org was gathered and a rough mailing and shopping list was obtained.

With the departments support, officers organized the purchase, packaging and shipment of 50 boxes for the troops. The boxes, holding about fifty dollars worth of items, held such things as specialized hot weather gear, cameras, magazines, personal hygiene items, candy and personal messages.

Since the mailing of these packages the department has received letters of thanks from these soldiers. With the success of this project the Police Department and the PBA. are planning to repeat another mailing in the near future.
