Over the limit, under arrest

From August 20 to September 6, 2010 , the Washington Township Police Department will be stepping up impaired driving enforcement as apart of the "Over the Limit Under Arrest" 2010 statewide crackdown. Patrols will apprehend impaired drivers. At some point in their lives, three out of every 10 Americans will be involved in an alcohol related crash. Last year alone, alcohol contributed to 38% of fatal motor vehicle crashes nationwide.

The end of the summer is traditionally a time of social gatherings, which often include alcohol. The goal of the program is to raise awareness about the dangers of drinking and driving through high visibility enforcement, and to arrest motorists who choose to drive impaired by drugs or alcohol.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that nationally, drunk driving fatalities accounted for 32 percent of all traffic deaths in 2008. a year where 152 people were killed as a result of alcohol-related crashes. That number represents 26 percent of the 590 traffic fatalities. reported. In addition, 56 of those alcohol-related fatalities occurred during the summer travel season. In 2007, 205 people were killed as a result of alcohol-related crashes on New Jersey's highways, representing 28 percent of the 724 traffic fatalities reported in the State. In addition, 82 of those 2007 alcohol-related fatalities occurred during the summer travel season.

Impaired drivers kill nearly 18,000 people on our nation’s roads each year. In NJ, 31% of motor vehicle fatalities are alcohol related. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that nearly 97% of Americans view drinking and driving by others as a threat to their families and themselves.

Members of the Washington Township Police Department will work diligently to eradicate impaired drivers from our roads.
