The Washington Township Police Department has received approval to implement a police K-9 Unit. The concept was initiated by Police Officer Peter Cecere, a six year veteran of the police department. Officer Cecere had an interest in police K-9 and purchased 'Kobe', a Belgian Malinois, a dog similar to a German Shepard but smaller and more agile. Officer Cecere attended K-9 handlers courses on his own time, at his own expense with 'Kobe'.

Kobe is trained in narcotics detection and human tracking. His abilities will be used in narcotics investigations, detecting evidence, locating missing persons, deterring criminal activity and in building searches. Having a K-9 readily available will expedite law enforcement services for Washington Township and Califon Borough.

PO Cecere worked diligently to obtain donations to provide for veterinary and feeding expenses for Kobe in the future, and as a result this program will not affect the police departments operating budget. Other donations were secured to obtain a patrol car enclosure and window tinting for the patrol unit that will be used to transport Kobe.

A presentation and demonstration of Kobe’s abilities was shown at the Washington Township Committee meeting on February 16, 2011 at which time the Township Committee approved of assigning Kobe to the patrol division. Officer Cecere and Kobe will begin working together in the next few weeks.
