The hat found in the stolen pickup truck.Detective Corporal Micco initiated a follow up investigation on the Aggravated Assault of Sergeant Bratus that occurred on July 10, 2003, when an individual tried to run down Sergeant Bratus with a stolen pickup truck . Micco was intrigued by the mention of a baseball hat found in the truck that afternoon in July. The hat was a green baseball cap with SWB embroidered in blue on the front. Written inside the hat were the initials "S.K." and under the bill, the numbers "03". Being a baseball fan, Micco realized the hat was a "Scranton Wilkes-Barre Red Barons" cap. The Red Barons are a minor league AAA affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies. A check of the Red Barons web site revealed that that all of the hats for sale in the team store are blue. The recovered cap was green.

Micco called the team Headquarters and gave Ms. Byron, Assistant to the General Manager of the Red Barons, an overview of the case, and described the hat recovered. Ms. Byron stated everyone in attendance about 3 years ago was given a green cap as part of a team promotion at the ballpark. Ms. Byron checked further, and found that some of the remaining green hats were given to inmates of the Lackawanna County Jail's work release program. The inmates were provided the caps after they did an exceptional job cleaning up at the stadium. The Lackawanna County Stadium is a county owned facility, and utilizes the county inmate labor program.

The underside of the bill, with the initials that would break the case.Micco contacted the Lackawanna County Jail and asked if any inmate with the initials "S.K." received a green cap. Only one inmate with the initials “SK”, assigned to a work detail at the stadium received a cap, a Scott Kobesky.

Detective Corporal Micco met with Mr. Kobesky, and after relating all the facts to him, Mr. Kobesky confessed and related all that occurred in July. Mr. Kobesky was charged with motor vehicle theft, aggravated assault on a Police Officer, eluding, possession of stolen property, and several other charges.
