You Drink & Drive, You Lose

From August 18 to September 4, 2006 , the Washington Township Police Department will be stepping up impaired driving enforcement as apart of the "You Drink and Drive, You Lose" 2006 statewide crackdown. Supplemental patrols will be utilized to apprehend impaired drivers. At some point in their lives, three out of every 10 Americans will be involved in an alcohol related crash. Last year alone, alcohol contributed to 38% of fatal motor vehicle crashes nationwide. The Washington Township Police Department has received a grant to increase the detection of intoxicated drivers.

The end of the summer is traditionally a time of social gatherings, which often include alcohol. The goal of the program is to raise awareness about the dangers of drinking and driving through high visibility enforcement, and to arrest motorists who choose to drive impaired by drugs or alcohol.

Impaired drivers kill nearly 18,000 people on our nation’s roads each year. In NJ, 31% of motor vehicle fatalities are alcohol related. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that nearly 97% of Americans view drinking and driving by others as a threat to their families and themselves.

Members of the Washington Township Police Department will work diligently to eradicate impaired drivers from our roads.
