In 2003, t
he Click it or Ticket program ran
from November 17th, to November 30th. During that time, over
fifty summonses were issued to drivers for not having their seatbelts
fastened. At the time of the 2003 Program, East Avenue, Route 24 and Schooley's Mountain Road were
areas where the greatest percentage of summonses were issued.
The pictures above were
taken when Sergeant Compton, Corporal Barnes, Patrol Officers Brobst,
Leonardi and Hade were monitoring traffic on East Avenue. In
the past 26 years, safety belts helped prevent over 135,000 fatalities
and 3,800,000 injuries, saving $585 billion in medical and other costs.
If all vehicle occupants had used safety belts during that period, nearly
315,000 deaths and 5.2 million injuries could have been prevented - and
$913,000,000,000 in costs saved. [NHTSA,
Economic Impact of Crashes, 2002]
